The Nervous Beginnings
My journey began with filling out an application form. Filling out the form was no easy task, as it required me to share my experiences as a school captain, my passion for football, and my social skills. After completing the form, I anxiously waited and eventually received an email inviting me for an interview. Despite my nervousness, I faced the interview with four people confidently, and to my delight, I was selected for the program.
Embracing New Experiences
Traveling from Nepal to the United States was an adventure in itself. My excitement soared as I boarded my first-ever long-haul flight. During the journey, I met a friendly fellow traveler who entertained me and my friend, sharing fascinating insights about flying. After landing in Qatar for a 5-hour transit, I braced myself for the 12-hour flight to New York.
Upon arriving in the USA, I felt completely out of my comfort zone, but soon, I found myself adjusting and bonding with a diverse group of girls from different corners of the world. We shared stories about our countries, languages, cuisines, and customs, creating a unique melting pot of cultures and friendships.
Life Lessons and Football Thrills
The program's initial days focused on classes that aimed to build our leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and resilience against societal pressures. Along with my international friends, I also got a chance to watch a football match between Inter Miami and Philadelphia, an unforgettable experience for a young football enthusiast like me.
The subsequent days were all about intense training, team building, and networking. I cherished every moment spent on the football field, training alongside national players and learning from skilled coaches. The organizers thoughtfully formed teams with participants from different countries, helping us to become friends.
The Joy of Cultural Exchange
Beyond football and leadership training, the program was an incredible opportunity for cultural exchange. I relished trying new foods, although I missed the spiciness of Nepali cuisine. Engaging with girls from diverse backgrounds taught me to appreciate different cultures and expand my worldview.
From playing various team-building games to enjoying a night of football under the stars, I immersed myself in the joy of learning from each other , and making lifelong memories. As the program approached its end, everyone had to bid farewell, and I am sure I will miss them.
A Delayed Return and Lasting Impact
Sadly, my flight back to Nepal faced a hiccup with a cancellation due to technical issues. But this unplanned extension allowed me to explore New York City and purchase thoughtful gifts for my friends and family.
As I returned home, I felt happy, having gained valuable experiences, knowledge, and personal growth during my time in the USA. This incredible opportunity had not only made me a better football player but also a stronger and more open-minded individual.
A Remarkable Journey
My trip to the USA was a remarkable journey of cultural exchange, and personal development. Through the "Developing Leaders through Sports" program, I not only got to play football with national players but also learned valuable life lessons about leadership, decision-making, and embracing diversity. The experience of interacting with girls from different backgrounds broadened my perspective and nurtured lifelong friendships. This trip was more than just a sports exchange; it was an enriching experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
