Dance Dance Dance

Mamata Rana (grade 9) shares her experience with the art of dance.

The full form of dance is D- discipline, A- acting, N- nice, C- confident, E- energy and expression. There are various types of dance such as cultural, modern, classic, hip-pop, etc. In my opinion, dance is a creative activity that helps our blood flow to each and every part of our body. Everyone knows that they need to be physically, mentally and socially healthy. However, many people are too lazy to do sports. There are many types but I love dance the most. It helps to balance our bodies. Whenever I dance, I feel like I have a secure and joyful life.

In Nepal, we have a saying: when old people die, the library burns to the ground. This means that when a person dies, their understanding of the world disappears. However, anything they taught the next generation before won't just disappear. That’s why I want to learn more about dance and teach people to be dancers. A dancer is a person who truly understands rhythm and moves their body accordingly. While you dance, you can feel how and where your body is moving.

If you wanna learn to dance, then you need to learn songs. In my dancing classes, we start with some dancing exercises to warm up our bodies. After that, we either dance in a group or alone. While dancing, you have to show your expression according to the song. I think music is something magical that makes your stress come down. And when you dance, you will be able to truly feel the music.
While at Maya, we used to meditate in class, listen to music and forget whatever our stress was about. Dancing does the same for me. Dancing allows you to express an idea or emotion, release energy, or simply take delight in the movement of your body. Dancing is more about the feelings inside of you and it is a very primal way of physically exercising.

Whenever you work out, if you play music that matches the exercise, it will motivate you to work harder, just like Bas sir does in his workouts. Music will amplify your feelings, for example: if you feel sad you might play sad music, if you’re happy you’ll play a happy song. If you feel like you wanna be motivated, you will play motivational music. And if you are with your friends having a party, you might put on a dancing song or a song that you can sing along to. Dance and music became a big part of my life at Maya, and with Maya’s support, I will introduce the magic of dance and music to many more people.
