Maya faculties

Bas de Nijs, our Nepal coördinator, gives an update on the situation at Maya.

Maya's three schools, all located in Tanahun district, are opening their doors to local students starting this Sunday (Oct 4th). As the lockdown has lasted for over six months now, students and teachers are eager to get back to class and continue learning. The logistics need to be fine-tuned as government guidelines change by the day, but the message to the children in the villages remains: come to school!

Most of the Maya Home children living in Udayapur (East Nepal) and Tanahun have been attending classes either online or in the education hubs guided by local teachers and older students. However, the Mayans living in Gorkha, the district most severely hit by the 2015 earthquake, have remained relatively unreachable. Since schools are attempting to reopen across the country, Maya delegate Shubham Shrestha (grade 10) ventured into Gorkha where he had to walk for two days and endure a quarantine before he finally saw friendly faces. He gathered fifteen Maya students from the area and they've resumed daily classes, both on and offline, since the start of last week.
