This year is a big one for Maya in terms of construction projects. While we're still putting the finishing touches on the third and final floor of the school building, the construction of the study hall and new dormitories for the Maya hostel is already in full swing.
This year is a big one for Maya in terms of construction projects. While we're still putting the finishing touches on the third and final floor of the school building, the construction of the study hall and new dormitories for the Maya hostel is already in full swing.
The earthquake-proof foundation of the school building was laid back in 2019, and the work is now finally coming to a close. We divided the project into three separate fundraisers so that we could start building the first floor while raising funds for the other two. There are currently around a hundred students learning in the six classrooms on the first and second floor, and the final floor will comprise Maya's very first computer lab and a library.
The hostel has been subjected to a complete reorganization. By renovating the existing structures and building four new dorm rooms, the 64 hostel students that will live at Maya next year will stay in rooms of four rather than eight or twelve. We want to give the children in our care the most privacy and comfort possible, and believe that less people in a room, more private storage space and an indoor study hall with personal desks are a big leap in the right direction.
For years, both Nepali and foreign educators have added their experience to the Maya team operating in the rural community. With these major construction projects, Maya's main school will finally have the facilities to match the level of education provided at the school. A big thanks to everyone who contributed!
