Manish, Krishna and Ashish have been students at Maya since the school opened. The first two are now in grade 10 and Ashish is in grade 9 for. Due to the long-lasting pandemic, schools had been closed for months and there was no source of income for many families. Despite online classes, the days were all alike and it became harder and harder for the boys to find new sources of excitement.
One day, while having dinner together at Krishna’s house and discussing about their future, they decided to start a new project, to use this unusual time to be productive. They got the idea of raising broiler chickens, which could benefit them in learning and getting new skills as well as support their families.
They discussed about their project with Manjil Rana, the founder of Maya Universe Academy, who was very enthusiastic seeing his students stepping up and taking the lead. He agreed to let them use the school’s chicken farm and to invest in their enterprise. He bought them 500 chicks and paid for the chicken feed.
September was the perfect month to start, as it would give them enough time to raise the chickens for Tihar, one of the biggest Hindu festivals of Nepal, when they could sell them.
At first, they thought it would be easy, but they soon had a lot of challenges to face: the lack of water and transport and the high price of the feed were among these. Nevertheless, they managed to keep up with their studies while working hard at the farm. They felt that the society’s consideration changed toward them and that they were treated with more respect. The chickens will soon be ready to be sold and the boys expect to earn enough to pay back the investment and, who knows, maybe invest in some local chickens next time?
